Ways of Seeing is a 10-week course that examines major modern and contemporary art movements in the context of the social, cultural, and political events of the past century. This course is designed to familiarize participants with how to read a work of art, unraveling the clues to decipher and understand why one painting, sculpture, installation, or image is valued over another.
The last hundred years have been a turbulent and dynamic time in the world of art. As new museums opened and biennales and art fairs proliferated in cities throughout the world, new arbiters and critics emerged, giving us tools and opportunities to develop informed opinions.
The course is uniquely designed to help participants appreciate how artworks of the recent past shape the future.
Topics:
- Archives; archives as research, archives as objects
- Prehistoric art
- Case study: Egypt/ Middle East
- Defining the canon of art history through images and readings
