NEXUS targets artists and cultural practitioners to provide a platform for developing their practice. The course will address the "Reading, Unpacking, and Rewriting Global Art Histories" and will include a broad survey of global currents in the arts throughout the 20th century and the present. It primarily will focus on the impact of contemporary art produced in the Global South on the international art world. It aims to equip participants with conceptual currents in modern and contemporary art, ascents of critical theory, and a wide range of art-historical approaches.
The course is structured around the following topics:
- Colonialism and post colonialism
- Orientalism
- Constructed Identities
- Patriarchy
- Ethics and Morality
- Weaponization of Art
The course includes a series of short assignments in line with its core subjects.
About the instructor:
William Wells is the Director of Educational Programs and Exhibitions at Al Riwaq. He is a curator, writer, and art critic. Wells set up the Townhouse Gallery, Cairo, in 1998 to promote contemporary art in Egypt. He served as an educational advisor to the UK’s Arts Council and Crafts Council. Wells sits on the board of the Foundation for Arts Initiatives, is the Chairman of the Townhouse Foundation in Sweden, and is currently Director of Educational Programs and Exhibitions at Al Riwaq.
