About the Masterclass

The Masterclass offers a comprehensive learning experience that explores one of the most significant craft traditions of Islamic art. The program introduces participants to the evolution of Islamic tile art, the principles of geometric, floral, and calligraphic ornamentation, as well as techniques for clay preparation, tile forming, glazing, decoration, and tile assembly.

By integrating theoretical study with practical application, the program enables participants to develop their artistic and technical skills while creating ceramic works inspired by the rich traditions of Islamic tile art and reinterpreting them through contemporary perspectives. The program concludes with a final project that reflects each participant's creative vision and the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course.

Week 1: Foundations and Clay Tile Making

Theoretical Component

- Introduction to Islamic ceramic tile art.

- Historical overview of the origins and development of Islamic ceramic arts.

Practical Component

- Hand-building and shaping clay to produce uniform plain tiles that will serve as the base for the different techniques explored throughout the program (Cuerda Seca, İznik, and Metallic Lustre).

Kiln Firing

- The tiles are left to dry slowly before undergoing the first firing (Bisque Firing).

Week 2: Geometry and Deconstruction

Theoretical Component

- Introduction to stonepaste and its role in Islamic ceramics.

- Exploration of the philosophy and geometric principles of Moroccan zellij.

- Introduction to Timurid mosaic techniques and their significance in Islamic architecture and ornamentation.

Practical Component

- Using templates and cutting tools to create zellij and mosaic units.

- Producing relief tiles using custom-made molds.

- Preparing all pieces for firing.

Kiln Firing

- The works are left to dry before undergoing the first firing (Bisque Firing).

Week 3: Cuerda Seca Technique

Theoretical Component

- Introduction to the Cuerda Seca technique.

- Historical overview of the technique's development from Al-Andalus to Isfahan, with an explanation of the color-separation method and its role in Islamic ceramic decoration.

Practical Component

- Working on the bisque-fired tiles produced during Week 1.

- Applying the dark outlining medium (Cuerda Seca lines).

- Filling the enclosed areas with colored glazes according to the selected design.

Kiln Firing

- The tiles are fired to complete the glazing process and reveal the final colors and finish.

Week 4: Glazing Geometric Tiles

Practical Component

- Working with the bisque-fired zellij and mosaic pieces produced during Week 2.

- Applying colored glazes to the ceramic units with attention to color harmony, precision, and craftsmanship.

- Preparing the glazed pieces for assembly in the following weeks.

Kiln Firing

- The glazed pieces undergo their final firing to mature the glazes and reveal their finished colors.

Week 5: The Brilliance of İznik

Theoretical Component

- Introduction to Ottoman architecture and its influence on ceramic art.

- Study of the distinctive floral motifs of İznik ceramics, with a focus on the symbolism of tulips and carnations.

Practical Component

- Transferring floral designs onto ceramic tiles with precision.

- Drawing the contour lines of the design.

- Applying color using the underglaze technique.

- Coating the finished design with a transparent glaze in preparation for firing.

Kiln Firing

- The pieces undergo their final firing to mature the transparent glaze and reveal the finished colors and decorative details.

Week 6: The Magic of Metallic Lustre

Theoretical Component

- Introduction to the history of metallic lustre in Islamic ceramics, tracing its origins to Basra.

- Exploration of the relationship between traditional chemistry and metallic lustre techniques.

- Study of the evolution of metallic surface effects in contemporary ceramics and their artistic applications.

Practical Component

- Applying advanced glazes to create metallic and golden surface effects on ceramic tiles.

- Learning how to layer glazes to achieve rich visual textures and color variations.

Kiln Firing

- The works undergo their final firing to develop the metallic lustre effects.

Week 7: Assembly – Geometric Puzzle Day

Practical Component

- A full studio session dedicated to assembling the glazed zellij and Timurid mosaic pieces.

- Arranging the colored units according to the geometric design and carefully mounting them within custom assembly frames.

- Learning techniques for aligning and assembling geometric compositions with precision.

- This session marks the culmination of the previous weeks' work, bringing together the individually cut and glazed pieces into complete ceramic panels inspired by the geometry of Islamic art.

Week 8: Final Presentation and Exhibition

Practical Component

- Mounting all completed works, including individual ceramic tiles and assembled zellij and mosaic panels, onto wooden presentation boards.

- Applying final finishing touches and preparing the works for display.

Closing

- Presenting the participants' works in a final exhibition at Al Riwaq Art Space.

- Conducting a group critique and discussion of the completed projects.

- Awarding certificates of participation in recognition of the participants' achievements and successful completion of the Masterclass.

نبذة عن البرنامج:

تقدّم الدورة الاحترافية تجربة تعليمية وعملية تستكشف أحد أبرز الفنون الحرفية في التراث الإسلامي. يجمع البرنامج بين المعرفة التاريخية والتدريب التطبيقي، حيث يتعرّف المشاركون على تطور فن البلاط الإسلامي، ومبادئ الزخرفة الهندسية والنباتية والخطية، إلى جانب تقنيات تشكيل الطين، والتلوين، والتزجيج، وتجميع البلاط.

من خلال المزج بين الدراسة النظرية والممارسة العملية، يتيح البرنامج للمشاركين تطوير مهاراتهم الفنية وإنتاج أعمال خزفية مستوحاة من تقاليد البلاط الإسلامي، مع إعادة توظيفها ضمن رؤى معاصرة، وصولًا إلى تنفيذ مشروع فني نهائي يعكس معارفهم وتجربتهم الإبداعية.

الأسبوع الأول: التأسيس وقوالب الطين

الجانب النظري:

- مقدمة عن فن البلاط الإسلامي.

- السياق التاريخي لنشأة الفنون الخزفية الإسلامية وتطورها.

الجانب العملي:

- فرد وتشكيل الطين يدويًا لإنتاج بلاطات سادة بمقاس موحّد، تُستخدم في التقنيات المختلفة (الحبل الجاف، إزنيق، والتأثير المعدني).

دورة الفرن:

- تُترك البلاطات لتجف ببطء، ثم تدخل الفرن لإجراء الحريق الأول (حريق البسكويت).

الأسبوع الثاني: الهندسة والتفكيك

الجانب النظري:

- التعرف على العجينة الحجرية واستخداماتها في صناعة الخزف الإسلامي.

- استكشاف فلسفة الزليج المغربي وتقنياته الهندسية.

- التعرف على الفسيفساء التيمورية ودورها في العمارة والزخرفة الإسلامية.

الجانب العملي:

- استخدام القوالب وأدوات التقطيع لتشكيل وحدات الزليج والفسيفساء.

- تنفيذ بلاطات ذات قالب بارز (Relief Tiles) باستخدام القوالب المخصصة.

- إعداد القطع وتجهيزها للحرق.

دورة الفرن:

- تُترك الأعمال لتجف، ثم تدخل الفرن لإجراء الحريق الأول (حريق البسكويت).

الأسبوع الثالث: تقنية الحبل الجاف (Cuerda Seca)

الجانب النظري:

- التعريف بتقنية الحبل الجاف (Cuerda Seca).

- استعراض تاريخ التقنية وتطورها من الأندلس إلى أصفهان، مع شرح مبدأ عزل الألوان ودورها في إنتاج الزخارف الخزفية الإسلامية.

الجانب العملي:

- استخدام البلاطات المحروقة من الأسبوع الأول.

- تطبيق خطوط العزل الداكنة (الحبل الجاف).

- ملء المساحات بالألوان الزجاجية (الطلاءات الزجاجية) وفق التصميم المختار.

دورة الفرن:

- إدخال البلاطات إلى الفرن لإجراء الحريق النهائي وإظهار الألوان واللمسات النهائية.

الأسبوع الرابع: تلوين القوالب والهندسة

الجانب العملي:

- استخدام قطع الزليج والفسيفساء المحروقة (المنجزة في الأسبوع الثاني).

- تطبيق الطلاءات الزجاجية على الوحدات الخزفية باستخدام الألوان المناسبة، مع مراعاة التدرجات اللونية ودقة التنفيذ.

- تجهيز القطع لتصبح جاهزة لمرحلة التجميع والتركيب في الأسابيع اللاحقة.

دورة الفرن:

- إدخال القطع إلى الفرن لإجراء الحريق النهائي، وتثبيت الطلاءات الزجاجية وإظهار ألوانها النهائية.

الأسبوع الخامس: إشراقة إزنيق

الجانب النظري:

- التعرف على فنون العمارة العثمانية وتأثيرها في تطور الخزف.

- دراسة الزخارف النباتية المميزة لخزف إزنيق، مع التركيز على رمزية أزهار التوليب والقرنفل وعناصرها الزخرفية.

الجانب العملي:

- نقل الزخارف النباتية إلى البلاطات بدقة.

- رسم الخطوط الخارجية (الكونتور) للتصميم.

- تلوين الزخارف باستخدام تقنية التلوين تحت الطلاء الزجاجي (Underglaze).

- تغطية العمل بطبقة من الطلاء الزجاجي الشفاف استعدادًا للحريق.

دورة الفرن:

- إدخال القطع إلى الفرن لإجراء الحريق النهائي، لتثبيت الطلاء الزجاجي وإبراز الألوان والزخارف النهائية.

الأسبوع السادس: سحر البريق المعدني

الجانب النظري:

- التعرف على تاريخ البريق المعدني في الخزف الإسلامي، وانطلاقته من البصرة.

- استكشاف العلاقة بين الكيمياء التقليدية وتقنيات البريق المعدني.

- دراسة تطور التأثيرات المعدنية في الخزف المعاصر وأساليب توظيفها.

الجانب العملي:

- تطبيق طلاءات زجاجية متقدمة ذات تأثيرات معدنية وذهبية على البلاطات الخزفية.

- التعرف على كيفية دمج طبقات الطلاءات الزجاجية للحصول على تأثيرات لونية وبصرية متنوعة.

دورة الفرن:

- إدخال الأعمال إلى الفرن لإجراء الحريق النهائي وإظهار التأثيرات المعدنية النهائية.

الأسبوع السابع: التجميع – يوم البازل الهندسي

الجانب العملي:

- يوم مخصص بالكامل لتجميع وحدات الزليج والفسيفساء التيمورية بعد خروجها من الفرن.

- ترتيب القطع الملونة وفق التصميم الهندسي، ثم تثبيتها بعناية داخل إطارات التجميع المخصصة.

- التعرف على أساليب تركيب الوحدات الهندسية وضبط المحاذاة للحصول على تكوين متوازن ودقيق.

يُعد هذا اليوم تتويجًا للعمل المنجز خلال الأسابيع السابقة، حيث يجمع المشاركون الوحدات التي قاموا بقصها وتلوينها لتكوين لوحة خزفية متكاملة تعكس جمال الهندسة الإسلامية ودقة تنفيذها.

الأسبوع الثامن: الإخراج النهائي والمعرض

الجانب العملي:

- تثبيت جميع الأعمال المنجزة، بما في ذلك البلاطات الفردية ولوحات الزليج والفسيفساء، على ألواح العرض الخشبية (Presentation Boards).

- تنفيذ اللمسات النهائية وتجهيز الأعمال للعرض.

الختام:

- تنظيم معرض ختامي مصغّر داخل مساحة الرواق للفنون، يضم أعمال المشاركين المنجزة خلال البرنامج.

- تقديم تقييم فني للأعمال ومناقشة التجارب والنتائج مع المشاركين.

- توزيع شهادات المشاركة احتفاءً بإنجازاتهم واختتام البرنامج.
