Call for Applications: 'Nexus - Ways of Seeing' Art Education Program (Deadline: July 7th, 2019)

Updated: Jul 3, 2019

Al Riwaq Art Space announces an open call for applications to participate in its first edition of the NEXUS art education program. The program will run between September 1, 2019 and February 29, 2020 in Manama, Bahrain. For those selected, there will be a supplementary course called WAYS OF SEEING that will take place between July 22 - August 22. WAYS OF SEEING will provide a strong foundation for the NEXUS program.

For this first edition, Al Riwaq proposes to address the crucial issue of “Reading, Unpacking, and Rewriting Global Art Histories.” Through the NEXUS program, we propose a series of courses that present a broad survey of global currents in the arts throughout the course of the 20th century and into the present day. This 6-month series of lectures, seminars, and presentations aims to equip students with a baseline knowledge of the major formal trends and conceptual currents in modern and contemporary art; a foundation in contemporary critical theory, and; to familiarize students with a wide range of art historical approaches. The series of seminars tackles these issues with an interdisciplinary focus, looking at art history, theory, and philosophy. The aim of this is to help guide the participants to find their own placement within and relationship to art history/histories.

The 2019-2020 NEXUS program will include weekly meetings, monthly lectures by visiting specialists, joint studio and exhibition visits, and a program-ending 1-week symposium. There will also be an embedded 1-on-1 mentorship for participants interested in developing their personal art or research projects and support for completing individual projects.

This program is delivered in partnership with British Council Bahrain as part of the Gulf Culture & Sport Program, which aims to develop mutual understanding and respect through sharing and appreciating Gulf and UK culture, history and heritage, and by developing long-term arts and education relationships between institutions.

Supplementary Program - WAYS OF SEEING:

Prior to the NEXUS program, there will be a supplementary course entitled WAYS OF SEEING that will introduce the topics explored in depth during NEXUS. WAYS OF SEEING will have the participants build their own archives and examine their findings through the discourse of the course. Such a process will instill in the selected participants a critical approach to looking at global and local art histories while embracing all the uncovered connections and contradictions. Although WAYS OF SEEING is a supplementary course, we strongly encourage the NEXUS participants to be involved. This course will be run between July 22 and August 22, and the NEXUS program will run soon after between September 1, 2019 and February 29, 2020. Admission

Participants will be selected through an open call. Candidates will be selected based on the merit of their applications. The application deadline is July 3rd, 2019. Selected candidates will be notified by July 9th, 2019.

Bahrain-based students and professionals who are interested in beginning or evolving their career in the arts, but who have not had the opportunity to engage within the broader arts and culture field at a practical level. During the process of selecting participants, Al Riwaq will give priority to applicants with a demonstrable interested in working in the local arts scene, whether as a practicing artist, participation in previous workshops, or engagement with the arts in any discipline, internships, or curatorial projects. The seminars will be limited to a maximum of 20 participants so as to facilitate individualized attention. Al Riwaq Art Space is committed to ensuring that equal opportunities are given to all participants from Bahrain. A fair, open, and transparent process will be used to recruit the program participants as well as the speakers, facilitators, and visiting artists/speakers - some of whom will be coming from abroad.
